"Spartacus: Blood and Sand" fans received some good news in the New Year. The series is going ahead with a second season.

A Starz spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com "It is true that it has been renewed, but no air date has been discussed."

The show's future came to a halt after star Andy Whitfield, who plays Spartacus, announced he was leaving the series in September after doctors told him he had to resume aggressive treatment of his Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved," the 36 year-old actor said in a statement released at the time. "It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey."

According to an earlier report by The Hollywood Reporter, Starz, the network behind "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," was seeking an option to find a new actor to lead the series. Network CEO Chris Albrecht told the industry paper on Friday that the casting process is almost over but declined to offer any more details.

"We're very confident about where we are in the casting process of finding a lead actor to step into Spartacus' sandals," Albrecht said, "though we'll never be able to replace Andy Whitfield."

Whitfield was diagnosed with treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March and then began treatment, while production on the second season of the series was put on hold and a prequel series called, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," was created to bridge a gap.

"Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" debuts on Jan. 21 and will air six episodes. According to the Associated Press, producer Steven DeKnight told journalists on Friday, "There are some deaths that are so incredible you just have to rewind and watch again because you can't believe what you just saw."
