'Sons of Anarchy' season 6 finale: Recap - 7 highlights (Spoilers)

Blood, tragedy, tears and deaths were seen on the season 6 finale of the FX series "Sons of Anarchy," which also raised several questions about the fate of three key characters.

The show has been renewed for a seventh season, which is expected to premiere in fall 2014. Check out a mini-recap and 7 highlights from the season 6 finale episode, which is titled "A Mother's Work" and which aired on Dec. 10. Spoiler alert!

1. Jax tries to do the right thing

Last we saw Tara (Maggie Siff), she had taken her and Jax's two sons to a motel and it appeared as though she was going to strike a plea deal in which she would rat on SAMCRO by providing evidence of the motorcycle club's involvement in gun smuggling, and get herself and the children into a witness protection program. She would also receive immunity and not face charges over the murder of a prison nurse, for which she was falsely accused.

She was a no-show at a scheduled meeting with District Attorney Tyne Patterson (CCH Pounder). Jax (Charlie Hunnam) finds his estranged wife at a park they appear to reconcile. They meet with the DA and he tells her he will turn himself in instead in exchange for immunity for Tara and his club. She agrees.

2. Jackie Boy made Chibs cry

Jax, facing what he believes to be a maximum 25-year prison sentence (parole in seven years, if he's lucky), leaves to spend time with his sons, who are at the ice cream and candy shop with SAMCRO members. He tells his friends what's going on and everyone becomes emotional. Jas starts crying, as does Chibs (Tommy Flanagan). Jax appoints Bobby (Mark Boone Junior) president in his place.

3. Juice is a screw-up

In the previous episode, Juice (Theo Rossi), almost overdosed on pain pills amid an emotional breakdown over past bad deeds -- shooting dead a fellow SAMCRO member and smothering a mother of a child school shooter who used one of the club's guns with a pillow in a bid to cover up the MC's involvement. After his near-death experience, he confessed to Nero (Jimmy Smits), Gemma's boyfriend -- a friend of the club, but not a member -- that he was forced to murder the woman.

Nero later tells Jax about the conversation. As he exits the ice cream and candy shop following the cryfest, Jax whispers to Juice that he knows about his betrayal. And we know what happens when you betray SAMCRO. And Juice had already done so in the past and was given a pardon. Will he get a third chance? Is his fate sealed?

4. But assumption is the "mother of all screw-ups" - Eugene Lewis Fordsworthe

Jax's mother Gemma (Katey Sagal) is in extreme emotional distress, unaware of Jax's meeting with his wife or his reunion with her grandsons. She's drowning her sorrows.

Unser (Dayton Callie) arrives and tells her that Tara's lawyer requested old police files and that Jax will be arrested. Believing Tara made a deal with the DA to rat on SAMCRO, Gemma is furious and wants to see her son, but Unser won't let her drive under the influence, seeing as she once got into a car accident with the boys after smoking pot. Gemma steals his truck and goes anyway.

Tara is seen entering her family's house with Lieutenant Roosevelt (Rockmond Dunbar) accompanying her as a police escort. After she is left alone for a few moments, she encounters Gemma.

And this is the "Red Wedding" part of the "Sons of Anarchy" season 6 finale -- in minutes, Gemma proceeds to hit Tara with an iron, then push her head in a full kitchen sink while stabbing her head repeatedly with a large grill fork. RIP, Tara Knowles Teller.

NOTE: This has to be among the bloodiest, most shocking and most gruesome scenes ever seen on the show -- right up there with the removal of a disgraced SAMCRO member Kyle's back tattoo, the deadly beating of Opie, the murder of one of Tig's daughters, Chuckie's hasty recipe for human head chili and pretty much every nasty thing ever done to Otto (played by series creator Kurt Sutter, also Sagal's husband) -- as well as his horrifying, self-silencing maneuver.

Anyway, Roosevelt returns and sees the carnage and freaks out. He tells Gemma and no, Tara did not rat out the MC and starts to report the bloodbath. It looks as though Gemma, who can barely move out of shock, is headed to the same place as her son when suddenly Juice appears out of thin air and shoots dead the lieutenant. Stone-faced, he disposes of some of the evidence, including the iron and the fork, in multiple dumpsters.

Questions for season 7 - will Gemma tell Jax what she's done, or will she keep it a secret? How will he respond? What will she tell her grandsons? And can she live with what she's done?

5. No good deed goes unpunished

Jax later walks into his house and finds the bodies of Tara and Roosevelt. He sinks to the floor in despair and cradles his dead wife in his arms, sobbing and kissing her on the lips. It is a heartbreaking, beautiful moment and wonderful acting by Hunnam.

Then, in walks the DA. Will Jax be blamed?

6. Tig finally finds love ...

The SAMCRO member known for his ... unconventional tastes shows his sensitive side yet again. Years after losing his pet dog, Tig (Kim Coates) appears to be head over heels in love with his new BFF -- the pit bull he rescued from a dog fighting ring, who appears to have healed following an injury. At least someone's happy.

7. The homeless lady is back
A homeless woman seen periodically on the show makes another cameo. As seen in a photo Jax found earlier this season, she resembles a woman killed in a multi-vehicle accident that also claimed the life of his father. Are they the same person? Who is she?
