Sofia Vergara's brother deported to Colombia
The brother of "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara has been deported from the United States and sent back to the family's native Colombia, a report says.
In 1998, the 39-year-old actress, who plays Ed O'Neill's bombshell wife on the ABC comedy series, had brought Julio Vergara, 34, to live in Miami after their other brother was killed in a botched kidnapping.
Julio Vergara has battled a drug addiction for years. He was arrested more than two dozen times over the past decade for crimes such as the possession of cocaine, the dealing of marijuana, assault, theft and public intoxication, according to court reports obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. His last arrest was made in early April. He was ordered to pay a fine of almost $500 for pot possession.
He was deported on May 9, The Miami Herald quoted authorities as saying.
"ICE placed Mr.Vergara in removal proceedings on April 26, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman told the newspaper. "An immigration judge determined that he was no longer eligible to remain in the US because his criminal convictions are considered felonies under U.S. immigration law and ordered him removed to his home country of Colombia."
The actress and her brother have not commented about the matter publicly. Julio Vergara is one of the her five siblings. Their older brother, Rafael, was killed about 13 years ago in Colombia in a botched kidnapping.
"He paid the ransom and they tried to kidnap him again two years later," Sofia Vergara told The McClatchy-Tribune in 2006. "By that time, he was already carrying guns and had left his bodyguards in the house. They shot him when he went to reach for his gun.
Sofia Vergara is one of the most popular television actresses today and is seen by many as a sex symbol. She has been featured on the Maxim's "Hot 100" list and was named one of People magazine's "Most Beautiful." The actress recently appeared in the movie "The Smurfs" as French cosmetic executive Odile (check out a video interview with her).
"Modern Family", which began in 2009, is one of ABC's most popular shows. In 2010, it won six Emmys, including the award for "Outstanding Comedy Series". In 2011, it was nominated for another seven Emmy Awards, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Vergara (see a full list of 2011 Emmy nominations).
