Sofia Coppola weds Phoenix front man Thomas Mars in Italy

08/27/2011 by Olivia Allin

Sofia Coppola married Thomas Mars, a rocker and the father of her two children, in Italy on August 27.

The 40-year-old Oscar-winning screenwriter and director and Mars, the 34-year-old singer of the French group Phoenix, wed in the town of Bernalda in the garden of a 19th-century villa called Palazzo Margherita, which was renovated by her father, director Francis Ford Coppola, according to the Associated Press.

Francis Ford Coppola escorted Sofia down the aisle in the early evening, preceded by her older daughter. The bride wore a sheer, lavender tulle dress designed especially for her by Azzedine Alaļa while Mars reportedly wore a gray suit with a flower in his lapel.

Guests included actor Johnny Depp and Talia Shire, the bride's aunt, who is best known for her roles in her brother's "The Godfather" films and as Sylvester Stallone's girlfriend Adrian in "Rocky."

The wedding cake was a vanilla cake with chantilly cream, decorated with white flowers. Roughly 80 guests also dined on a meal of cheeses, figs, salads, pasta, fish and pork, which was locally-sourced. Wine from the Coppola family's farm was also served.

"Everything went well," Bernalda's mayor, Leonardo Chiruzzi who officiated the ceremony, told the Associated Press. "It was simple, calm, in the garden."

The remote town of Bernalda is located in southern Italy and is the town where her great-grandfather was born. Francis Ford Coppola reportedly plans to turn the Palazzo Margherita into a luxury boutique hotel, to bring guests to the small town, which is located in the "arch" of the boot-shaped country.

Sofia Coppola and Mars have two daughters, Romy, 4, and Cosima, 1. The pair met when he recorded a song with the band Air for her 1999 movie "The Virgin Suicides," People said. Mars' music has also been featured in the soundtracks of some of her other projects, such as the 2010 film "Somewhere" and the 2003 movie "Lost In Translation," which earned her an Oscar.

Sofia Coppola was previously married to director Spike Jones between 1999 and 2003. They have no children together.
