NBC's hit series 'Smash,' about the making of a Marilyn Monroe musical has been renewed for second season, the network confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com on March 22.

The series stars former "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee and Broadway star Megan Hilty as actresses competing for the role of Marilyn Monroe in a Broadway musical based on her life.

The drama ranks as the network's No. 1 drama in the 18-49 demographic, with 7.7 million viewers. "Smash" was the first series developed by NBC's new Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt.

"Smash," which premiered on February 6, also stars Debra Messing as songwriter Julia Houston, who co-wrote the Marilyn Monroe show's lyrics and Anjelica Huston as a producer named Eileen Rand.

"Smash is a love letter to New York and it's a love letter to the theater community and that has not been done before," Messing said in an interview provided by NBC at the show's red carpet premiere in late January. "You see a lot of people from the theater community here celebrating that."

"Smash" is NBC's second series to get an early pickup for next season, following last week's announcement that "Grimm" would also return for a second season.
