'Skyfall' wins weekend box weekend office with $87.8 million
"Skyfall," the latest film in the James Bond franchise, won the weekend box office and broke a record for U.S. opening weekend total for the franchise.
The film starring Daniel Craig earned an estimated $87.8 million over the weekend in its debut in U.S. theaters, according to The Associated Press. Including the $2.2 million from Thursday IMAX previews and other large-format theaters, "Skyfall" has topped the $90 million mark domestically.
The worldwide total for "Skyfall" now stands at $518.6 million. The film began to be released overseas in October.
In "Skyfall," which was helmed by "American Beauty" director Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig reprises his role as James Bond. The movie sees Bond's loyalty to Judi Dench's character, MI6 chief M, tested after her past comes back to haunt her. The British Secret Intelligence Service is attacked and 007 sets off to stop its perpetrator.
As the 23rd Bond film, "Skyfall" out earned the U.S. debut of its predecessor, the 2008 film "Quantum of Solace," and more than doubled the debut opening of Craig's first stint at Bond in the 2006 film "Casino Royale," which earned $40.8 million, the wire service reports.
In second place was last week's winner "Wreck-It Ralph." The CGI animated film about a video game villain's quest to become the good guy earned an estimated $33.1 million. In two weeks the film has earned $93.7 million domestically.
The Denzel Washington drama "Flight" came in third place for the weekend. The movie earned $15.1 million in its second week in theaters and now has a domestic total of $47.7 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. "Flight" was directed by Robert Zemeckis and marked his first live-action film in 12 years.
Ben Affleck's "Argo" is still doing strong box office business after five weeks in theaters, as is the thriller "Taken 2," which is in its sixth weekend in theaters. "Argo" nabbed an additional $6.7 million over the weekend to come in fourth place. The film's domestic total is now at $85.7 million.
Meanwhile, "Taken 2" earned an additional $4 million over the weekend to raise its domestic total to $131.2 million. The film currently trails behind its predecessor which earned $145 million at the box office.
