Shannen Doherty calls cops to try to help woman across the country
Shannen Doherty of "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Charmed" fame recently called police across the country to try and help a 27-year-old woman who had contacted her on Twitter and appeared to be in distress.
Doherty, who lives in Southern California, had called police in Westampton Township in New Jersey on Monday night to report about a slew of "concerning messages" a woman had sent her on the social networking site, authorities said in a message posted on the department's Facebook page.
Doherty, 41, relayed to authorities a Westampton address that the woman had said was her home. The actress said that she was concerned about the woman's well-being and safety.
According to E! Online, the person said on Twitter she would do something drastic if Doherty didn't call her.TMZ reported that Doherty told police that the person had threatened to kill herself unless she got a phone call from the actress.
The department stated on Facebook that police later arrived at the woman's house and talked to family members, who told them their 27-year-old daughter was in her room.
"Upon speaking with the female, there were no signs of her attempting to hurt herself and she also stated that she did not wish to harm herself," the message said. "She denied medical attention and was left with her family members."
Doherty first made mention of the incident on her Twitter page on Monday, posting a cryptic message of thanks to the Westampton Township police department "for being diligent and so reassuring." She later added in a separate Tweet to her some 180,000 followers: "Thanks gang. Police wasn't for me, was a girl on here who needed their help."
Actress Demi Moore is also credited with helping distressed Twitter fans. In 2009 and 2010, she shared two people's Tweets that appeared to be suicide threats with her followers, prompting others to contact police, E! News reported.
Doherty is best known for her past roles as Brenda on the 1990s shows "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Charmed" and also starred on several episodes of the CW's reboot show "90210" several years ago. She recently appeared on her own We TV series "Shannon Says," which showed her planning her 2011 wedding to third husband Kurt Iswarienko. Doherty is set to soon appear on the new NBC sitcom "The New Normal."
