Shakira chosen by Obama for education post

10/06/2011 by Carollyn Nguyen

President Barack Obama has chosen Colombian singer Shakira to be a member of his Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

The Grammy Award-winning singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has been involved with many global educational efforts, according to White House officials.

She founded the Barefoot Foundation, which has established schools in Colombia, South Africa, and Haiti.

In 2010, Shakira, known for hits like "Whenever, Wherever" and "Hips Don't Lie," worked with the World Bank to form an initiative that distributes educational programs for children in Latin America.

The 34-year-old pop star was among four people named to the president's advisory commission. The other three were Nancy Navarro, a Maryland politician, Adrian A. Pedroza, a community leader who works on issues of immigration and education reform, and Dr. Kent P. Scribner, a school district superintendent in Arizona.

"I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country," Obama said in a statement. "I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead."
