MTV is developing a pilot based on "Scream" and says it may be directed by Wes Craven, who helmed all four movies in the hit horror comedy film franchise.

No cast members have been announced. MTV said in a statement on April 25 that the one-hour pilot will "reinvent" the franchise. The cable company called it a "potential series" that is slated to debut in the summer of 2014. MTV adds that production company Dimension Films is in talks with Craven to direct it and is also conducting discussions with "various writers."

The first "Scream" film was released in 1996 and starred Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, a writer who is terrorized, along with her friends, by mysterious killers in ghost masks. She reprised her role in all four films, including the most recent one, which was released in 2011. The movie series has made more than $604 million worldwide.

Over the past 20 years, MTV's non-music programming has mostly included reality shows, such as "The Real World," "The Hills," "Jersey Shore" and spin-off "Snooki & JWoww," which was recently renewed for season 3. It has also enjoyed success with scripted teen drama series "Teen Wolf," whose third season is set to premiere on June 3.
