When "Scandal" returned for its third season premiere earlier this month, viewers had a chance to see a big confrontation between Olivia Pope and her father, Rowan Pope.

In addition, one of the bigger mysteries for the third season was set into place as Cyrus Beene was given an uncensored file by Rowan on "Operation Remington," a classified mission that President Fitzgerald Grant and Jake Ballard worked on together in Iran during their time in Navy. After Beene glanced at the file's first page, he uttered the words "Oh my god" and the episode ended there.

"Scandal" star Joe Morton, who plays Rowan on the show, talked to Rachel Smith, host of the "On The Red Carpet" TV show and OTRC.com, recently about Operation Remington, the Olivia, Fitz and Jake love triangle and more.

"It's something that ties a number of these characters together in terms of what they want and what they're willing to do to get what they want," Morton said about Operation Remington. "It's clearly a part of all of their pasts and when I say ... I'm talking about Fitz, I'm talking about Olivia, I'm talking about myself, so that all these things -- and Cyrus because he's been pulled in on all of this -- so, yes we're all tied to it and we will all have varying responses to what needs to be done about it."

Rowan made it very clear in the season 3 premiere episode that he was not happy about Olivia's relationship with Fitz and Morton explained Rowan's take on the show's developing love triangle.

"Rowan is not particularly happy that his daughter is messing around with the President of the United States for all the apparent reasons," Morton said. "One, because he's married and two, because he's the President of the United States and he wanted more for his daughter."

"Jake is someone who remains useful," Morton added with a smirk. He didn't elaborate on the remark.

The 65-year-old actor, who revealed that at his home they call Rowan "the 50 shades of scary," said of his stern character, "Rowan is someone who uses his judgment. Someone who keeps his eyes open and pretty much knows where he is in the world. Someone who has, obviously, collected power and contacts and influence and someone who stays in the dark and uses them all."

"Scandal" airs on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

OTRC.com, parent company KABC Television and the ABC Television Network are owned by the Walt Disney Company.

Reporting by Rachel Smith, host of the nationally syndicated entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings). The series is produced by KABC Television near Los Angeles.
