Sasheer Zamata to join 'Saturday Night Live'
"Saturday Night Live" has scored a new cast member -- Sasheer Zamata.
Zamata's casting was confirmed on NBC's official Twitter page on Monday, Jan. 6.
"Join us in welcoming Sasheer Zamata (@thesheertruth) to the cast!" the tweet said. "Next week is going to be awesome! #SNL #CantWait."
Zamata will take her first steps onto the legendary "Saturday Night Live" stage beginning Jan. 18, with host and musical guest Drake. She joins fellow featured players Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O'Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan among new editions in the show's 39th season on NBC.
Zamata's casting comes after the show drew wide debate for its lack of black female performers. She marks the first black female performer since Maya Rudolph, who left the show in 2007.
Zamata is an actress, writer, improviser and stand-up comedian and comes trained from the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Theatre in New York City.
