Sandra Oh to leave 'Grey's Anatomy' after season 10
"Grey's Anatomy" will lose another one of its original cast members.
Sandra Oh confirmed in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Aug. 13, that she will leave her role as Dr. Cristina Yang after the upcoming 10th season.
"Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," Oh said in a statement. "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the 'Grey's' writers to think of why she's going to go."
Oh was one of the original "Grey's Anatomy" actors who signed a two-year deal to remain on the show in May 2012 and the actress explained that she had been thinking about her character's exit since then.
"I've gone through a lot of therapy over this," Oh told the news outlet. "I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, Shonda [Rhimes, the creator of 'Grey's Anatomy'] took me aside and said, 'What are your thoughts?' I said, 'I'm ready.'"
Rhimes has also commented on Oh's departure and told The Hollywood Reporter, "This year is going to be bittersweet for us -- we're both going to savor every moment of Cristina Yang, and then we're going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, 'Grey's Anatomy' will once again be forever changed."
Oh won a Golden Globe for her role as Dr. Yang in 2006. She had also been nominated for five Emmys for playing the doctor.
Season 10 of "Grey's Anatomy" kicks off on Sept. 26 on ABC. OTRC.com correspondent Tony Cabrera recently caught up with several cast members, including Sara Ramirez and Kevin McKidd, and talked to them about the upcoming season.
"Callie has just found out about the cheating and the truth behind the cheating, which is that Arizona is still very, very angry about a promise being broken," Ramirez said about where her character is at the beginning of the season. She later added, "So Callie is reeling from all this information and doesn't hide it from the hospital."
"This time we're going to be picking up straight from the moment we finished," McKidd said about the 10th season premiere. "So there's a lot of those big cliffhanger-moments. We're going to find out what happens next."
