Sam Worthington of 'Avatar' arrested for assault in New York
Sam Worthington of "Avatar" fame was arrested on Sunday, Feb. 23, on suspicion of assault in New York City after getting into a scuffle with a photographer who kicked his girlfriend, model Lara Bingle, in the shin, police say.
The 37-year-old Australian actor has not commented. He was detained around 5:30 p.m. ET after allegedly punching the man and later released, according to the Associated Press. Police told the news wire that the photographer was also arrested on charges of reckless endangerment, assault and harassment and is being held pending his arraignment. It is unclear who caused the scuffle. Worthington is due in court on Feb. 26.
The confrontation took place outside of Benny's Burritos in Greenwich Village and both Worthington and Bingle were bloody after the altercation and showed their injuries to police, the manager told E! News.
In 2012, the actor made headlnes when he was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct following a confrontation near a bar in Atlanta in November 2012. The charges were dismissed.
The actor played Jake Sully in the Oscar-winning 2009 film "Avatar and has also appeared in movies such as "Wrath of the Titans," "Terminator Salvation," "The Debt". He is set to reprise his "Avatar" role in three planned sequels.
