Salma Hayek on wealth and fashion: I'm nobody's Barbie
Salma Hayek, an Oscar nominee who is married to the CEO of the luxury goods firm PPR, which owns Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, said she likes playing dress-up with her husband but is "nobody's Barbie."
The 44-year-old Mexican-born actress made her comments to Redbook magazine in an interview published in its November 2011 issue.
"I like to play fashion with him, but I'm nobody's Barbie," Hayek told the magazine of her husband's fashion influence, adding that it is easy to look good with one simple trick, "I was having dinner with my friend Demi -- yes, that one -- and she said, 'Oh, my God! Every time I see you, you are so put together!' And I told her it's a lot easier to grab a fabulous little dress than to put together a whole casual outfit with jeans, a top, the right jacket, and great shoes. You slip on a dress and you can't go wrong."
Hayek was born to a Lebanese-Mexican father and Mexican mother. The actress moved to the United States more than 20 years ago. She revealed in an interview with V Magazine Spain last year that she endured "racial discrimination in Hollywood" at the beginning of her acting career.
In 2009, Hayek married Francois-Henri Pinault, the CEO of luxury goods company PPR, which also owns fashion labels like Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and 50. His family is said to be worth more than $11.5 billion. They are parents to a 3-year-old daughter, Valentina.
"I work hard, I make my own living and I love it. I like having financial independence," Hayek continued. "I don't ever want to have to depend on anyone completely. But when I have troubles sometimes, it's nice to have someone there to help."
Hayek was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 2002 film "Frida" and had a recurring role on the comedy series "Ugly Betty." She has also starred alongside Spanish-born actor Antonio Banderas in "Desperado" as well as in the movie "One Upon a Time in Mexico."
The two voice the main characters in the animated film "Puss in Boots," a "Shrek" spin-off that is set for release on November 4 and also stars Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton.
Hayek will also appear in Oliver Stone's "Savages," which is slated for release on September 28, 2012 and also stars Blake Lively, Trevor Donovan and John Travolta.
"I'm playing the queen of a drug cartel in an Oliver Stone film," Hayek said of the role. "He asked if I'd gone 'all soft' because I'm a mother. I said, 'Yes, but I can be the devil if I need to, because after all, I'm an actress.'"
