'Safe Haven' and 'A Good Day to Die Hard' tie at Friday box office
The Presidents Day holiday box office is shaping up to be a fight between romance and action as both "Safe Haven" and "A Good Day to Die Hard" placed No. 1 at Friday's box office.
The films, which both opened on Valentine's Day on Thursday, grossed $7.2 million on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the report notes that "Safe Haven" had a slight edge when factoring the Thursday gross. The two-day totals put "Safe Haven" ahead with $16 million compared to "A Good Day to Die Hard"'s $15.5 million.
Former "Dancing With The Stars" pro Julianne Hough stars in "Safe Haven" as a woman with a dark past who falls in love with a widower, played by Josh Duhamel, after arriving in a North Carolina town. The film is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.
"A Good Day to Die Hard" features Bruce Willis reprising his role as John McClane. McClane attempts to rescue his son John "Jack" McClane Jr. (played by Jai Courtney) after Jack gets into trouble in Moscow. The two end up in the middle of a terrorism plot and join forces to try to stop the terrorists' plans from going forward.
In third place is last week's box office champ "Identity Thief," with $6.5 million. The film is expected to earn $26 to $27 million over the holiday weekend. So far the film has earned $53.8 million domestically.
There was some controversy with the film after New York Observer critic Rex Reed commented negatively on star Melissa McCarthy's weight. McCarthy's cousin Jenny McCarthy came to the comedian's defense earlier this week and said Reed could "go to hell."
In fourth place is the animated family film "Escape From Planet Earth," which earned $3.7 million on opening day. The film features the voices of Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba and Sarah Jessica Parker.
"Warm Bodies" finishes out the box office in fifth place. The film, which has been in theaters for three weeks, earned $2.6 million on Friday. So far, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie has grossed $43.8 million.
