Ryan Guzman talks about going shirtless for 'Step Up Revolution'
Ryan Guzman is making his acting -- and dancing -- debut in the film "Step Up Revolution" and the new actor reveals that being comfortable shirtless was a big requirement for taking on the character.
"They like to make my character shirtless, a lot," Guzman told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the film's premiere earlier this month. "So I definitely had to work out a little bit and get them abs ready for the people out there who are going to see this movie, but dance is a work out in itself. I lost 15 pounds in one week, just from dance alone. Unbelievable."
In the latest "Step Up" film, Kathryn McCormick plays Emily Anderson, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. She arrives in Miami with the hopes to become a professional dancer but quickly falls in love with Sean, played by Ryan Guzman.
The couple then lead a dance crew called the MOB in protest performance art. The group is at risk of losing their neighborhood to Emily's father and his development plans to displace thousands in the community.
McCormick had competed on the sixth and seventh seasons of "So You Think You Can Dance" but had never acted before her role in this film. Guzman had never acted or danced before signing up for the part of Sean.
Guzman, who also used to be a mixed martial arts fighter said that what the cast and director lacked in experience, they made up for in enthusiasm.
"What kind of ingredients are those? A guy that's only directed music videos, a guy that's never acted and danced, a girl that's never acted ever, but they were actually the right ingredients because we were all hungry," Guzman said. "It could either go really, really horrible or feeding off each other's energy and creating something amazing and I think that's what we did."
"Last year, before I was an actor I was a professional fighter and I never thought about acting so life and its curve balls -- I love 'em," he added.
"Step Up Revolution" hit theaters on July 27. Check out the trailer below.
