Russell Crowe: Henry Cavill - probably best Superman (Video)

"Man of Steel" hit theaters on Friday, June 14, and while the film hopes to successfully reboot the franchise, actor Russell Crowe praised the film's star, Henry Cavill, and his rendition of Superman. In the film, Cavill plays a modern version of Clark Kent / Superman. The movie follows the superhero's origin story and his struggle with his extraterrestrial heritage. When Earth is invaded by General Zod, a fellow Kryptonian played by Michael Shannon, Superman must race to save Earth and its humans. Amy Adams also appears in the film as Lois Lane, while Kevin Costner and Diane Lane star as Jonathan and Martha Kent. Russell Crowe plays Jor-El, Superman's father, and talked to George Pennacchio of KABC Television, OTRC.com's parent company, about the most intriguing part of "Man of Steel" and the difficulties he experienced while trying to move around in the costumes. "Well, hopefully, people are gonna really enjoy the movie. I think the thing that they're gonna find probably the most intriguing is probably the best actor who's ever played Superman," Crowe told Pennacchio of his co-star. "So there's more emotional scope within the role, but then there's also this non-linear existential journey that he goes on where, if you think about it just for a minute, of course you would have problems having superpowers." "Of course you would question yourself. And he's sort of, in a way, he kinda keeps running away from it," he added. "I think it's going to be very relatable. I think a lot of people will understand that set of problems." Crowe admitted earlier in the interview that he did not have a lot of background knowledge of Superman. "It was an interesting thing for me, because having never seen any of the previous 'Superman' movies & maybe I read a couple of comics when I was a kid," he said. "But my main reference was that 1950s black and white TV show, which never mentioned Jor-El or anything like that." The 49-year-old actor, who is no stranger to elaborate costumes after starring in films like "Gladiator," "Les Miserables" and "Robin Hood," said he had a little difficulty trying to fight Michael Shannon in his Kryptonian costume (see photos here). "The costume in the chamber, you know, that ceremonial costume? I could barely move in that thing," he said. "It was like having an ox on your back or something. 'Cause you've got the spandex, it's for layers, so then on top of that, to have that other stuff restricting you." "And then there's a fight sequence with that gear on and it's find as long as you don't have to lift a leg or left an arm," he added. And in that choreography, there was kicks and high blocks and all that so it was actually, that was the hardest fight I've ever had against a costume in my life." "First couple of weeks of 'Gladiator' were tough, 'cause the first couple of weeks of 'Gladiator,' everything was metal, everything was like, full weight and all that, and they weren't articulated," Crowe said. "So you couldn't sit down. So that was pretty tough. But the heat of the costume on this, yeah, it was difficult. Just the cape itself was about a 40-pound drag on the back of your neck." Who do you think played the best Superman? OTRC.com reviewer Jacob Burch called Cavill's Superman "more relatable" than previous portrayals. Vote in our poll below and watch the trailer for the film.
