Russell Brand spent a brief amount of time in a New Orleans jail on Thursday, March 15, after he turned himself in following an arrest warrant that was issued over his confrontation with a celebrity photographer, who accused him of throwing his iPhone through a window.
The 36-year-old, who is in the state to film a Diablo Cody movie, had joked about the incident, which occurred on Monday. He was accused of tossing the man's iPhone through the window of a nearby law firm office.
An arrest warrant over a "simple damage charge for the amount of $700" was issued. Brand turned himself in on Thursday afternoon and was booked just before 4:15 p.m. local time. His bail was set at $5,000. The jail's booking system announced at 4:38 p.m. local time that Brand had been released .
"Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently," Brand Tweeted on Wednesday. "What I did was a tribute to his memory."
Jobs, the late CEO and co-founder of Apple, which manufactures the iPhone, died last year. Depending on the model, the amount of memory installed in it and whether or not it comes with a provider contract commitment, the popular smartphone can retail for $699.
The smashed window has already been replaced and paid for by a company called Lamb Productions, E! News reported. The working title for the film Brand is shooting is called "Lamb of God" and marks Cody's directorial debut.
The movie is about a conservative woman who suffers a crisis of faith after surviving a plane crash. It also stars Julianne Hough, who appears with Brand in the 2012 film "Rock of Ages," and recent Oscar winner Octavia Spencer.
