Robert Relyea, producer and director, dies at 82

Robert Relyea, who served as a producer and director on films like "West Side Story," "The Magnificent Seven" and "Bullitt," has died at age 82.

The Associated Press reported on Saturday, March 16, that a spokesperson for Relyea said the filmmaker died on March 5 of natural causes in Los Angeles.

Relyea spent over 40 years in the film industry and worked as an assistant director on major motion pictures like "West Side Story," "Jailhouse Rock" with Elvis Presley, "The Magnificent Seven," "The Alamo" and "The Children's Hour."

He was also an executive producer for several Steve McQueen films like "Bullitt," ''Le Mans" and "The Reivers." His last producer credit was for the film "Las Action Hero" in 1993.

Relyea served as president of production at MGM-United Artists from 1997 to 2001. In 2008, he released his autobiography "Not So Quiet on the Set."

According to the AP, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five children; two stepchildren and grandchildren.
