Robert Pattinson talks elephant bonding for carny flick, 'Water for Elephants'

Robert Pattinson talked to Ryan Seacrest about his upcoming romance, "Water For Elephants" on Thursday.

Based on the New York Times Bestselling Sara Gruen novel, "Water For Elephants" tells the story of Jacob (Pattinson), a veterinary student who leaves school after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet, only to fall in love with the boss' (Christoph Waltz) wife and star performer, (Reese Witherspoon).

Seacrest joked that it might be confusing for "Twilight" fans to go see their beloved Edward go by the name of his competitor in the movies, Jacob.

"As soon as I read it, that was one of my main concerns, one of my only concerns," Pattinson said between laughs. "The fact that he's Polish as well, Jacob Jankowski kind of takes away from it. It's very different from 'Twilight.'"

During filming, Pattinson made friends with his talented co-stars but he also bonded with elephants.

"When I met Tai, who plays Rosie in the movie, she was with five or six fully-grown elephants and it is relatively intimidating at the beginning," Pattinson told Seacrest. "I got carried around in her mouth and stuff, the first day I met her and you quickly realize how incredible they are... they're the most sophisticated, gentle creatures you could possibly hope to work with."

And even though Pattinson's character goes after Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz's ("Inglourious Basterds") wife, he has a massive amount of respect for the actor.

"He's incredible. And he's kind of perfect for the movie as well," Pattinson said. "I think the part was written for an American, but the fact that he's an Austrian or probably Austrian mixed with a hybrid of a million other things, it's quite nice, to be representative of America at that time because everybody's immigrants and especially for the circus as well cause there's so many different nationalities working there."

When asked about her love scenes with the "Twilight" actor, Witherspoon gushed to Entertainment Tonight about Pattinson's many fine qualities.

"I am so lucky," Witherspoon told Entertainment Tonight. "He's so amazing and wonderful and sweet and just the nicest guy too, so you can just add that to the soup... I mean, he's just so good looking."

Even though Pattinson played Witherspoon's lover in the movie, not so long ago, she was cast as his mother in the 2004 film, "Vanity Fair." The scenes were eventually cut from the movie.

Witherspoon got engaged to talent agent Jim Toth in December, after dating for a year. Pattinson is dating his "Twilight" co-star Kristen Stewart and their director Catherine Hardwicke revealed recently that the pairs first meeting was "love at first sight."

"Water For Elephants" is set for release on April 22, 2011. Watch the extended trailer which was released on Thursday night below.
