Robert Downey Jr., wife Susan welcome baby boy, Exton Elias

02/07/2012 by Corinne Heller

Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan have welcomed a son named Exton Elias Downey, who is the couple's first child together.

Susan Downey gave birth on Tuesday, February 7, in Los Angeles, the actor's spokesperson confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com, following a report in People magazine.

The 46-year-old actor had revealed the baby's gender during an interview with host Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight Show" the previous December, saying that his wife was due to give birth in late February of 2012.

When asked at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' in if he got in trouble for making the announcement, the actor told OnTheRedCarpet.com: "No. Not really. She's very sweet ... If I told you the name, she'd lop off my head with a machete."

Susan Downey, 38, told OnTheRedCarpet.com that her husband's on-air announcement about their baby's gender was unplanned and that he told her about it moments after he filmed his "Tonight Show" interview.

"I can never really stay mad at him," she said. "He came sheepishly ... I was over at Warner Bros. (Studios), which is around the corner from 'Leno,' and he came through and he immediately admitted it. I was like, 'Really?'"

"It wasn't some preset gag, like they do sometimes - not at all,' she added. 'He said, 'I should have followed it up by saying, 'Well no, actually it's a girl' and let people be confused. I said, 'But you weren't trying to lie, you were actually trying to tell them what the situation was.' He's like, 'Yeah, good point.'"

Downey Jr. also has an 18-year-old son, Indio, with ex-wife Deborah Falconer. The two were married for nearly 12 years and finalized their divorce in 2004. Downey Jr. married his current wife a year later.

The two met on the set of the movie "Gothika" in 2003. She was one of the film's producers and went on to co-produce many of his films, including "Iron Man 2," "Due Date" and both "Sherlock Holmes" films.
