Rihanna cries about Chris Brown incident during Oprah interview - See video
Rihanna got candid in her interview with Oprah Winfrey for "Oprah's Next Chapter" set to air on Sunday and talked about her relationship with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.
The 24-year-old singer brought Winfrey to her hometown in Barbados and Winfrey asked Rihanna about Brown and the night he assaulted the singer after a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009.
"It was a weird, confusing space to be in," Rihanna said of the incident on "Oprah's Next Chapter," set to air on Sunday, August 19 at 9 p.m. ET. "As angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help."
"It became a circus and I felt protective," Rihanna continued. "I felt like the only person they hate right now is him. Who's gonna help him? Nobody's gonna say he needs help. Everybody's gonna say he's a monster without looking at the source. I was more concerned about him."
Brown pleaded guilty to a felony charge was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service and was ordered by the courts to receive domestic violence courses for a year.
"It was embarrassing. It was humiliating. I lost my best friend. Like, everything I knew switched - switched overnight," she said. "And I couldn't control that, so I had to deal with that, and that's not easy for me to understand or interpret. And it's not easy to interpret on camera. Not with the world watching."
In February, the singers released singles that featured guest vocals from one another. Rihanna recorded a remix of her song "Birthday Cake" and Brown released a remix of his song "Turn Up the Music."
Rumors have been going on for years that the two have reconnected romantically, however, Brown's spokesperson has denied the rumors as recently as late July.
In a promotional commercial for her interview with Rihanna, Oprah admitted she had certain ideas about the pop star prior to the interview.
"I went there with my own ideas about who she was, watching the videos and listening to her music. I thought she was going to be kind of a badass, kind of hard-edged rocker pop woman," Winfrey said. "Nothing could've been farther from the truth."
