Ricki Lake credits 'Dancing With The Stars' for elopement

04/18/2012 by Olivia Allin

Ricki Lake opened up about her recent elopement, giving some credit to "Dancing With The Stars" for her decision.

"'Dancing With The Stars' was such an experience where I felt like I was a princess twice a week," Lake told ABC's "The View" on Tuesday. "I got to get all the attention and the accolades and I didn't need that on my wedding day... I really wanted it to be about us."

The talk show host married Christian Evans on April 8, less than a year after announcing their engagement. Lake and her first husband, Rob Sussman, ended their some 10-year marriage in 2005. They have two sons - Milo, 15, and Owen, 10.

The only guests at the intimate beachfront wedding ceremony were the couple's two dogs. The 43-year-old actress' sons chose not to attend.

"It was Easter break. It was spring break and it was actually Easter Sunday and they were with their father," Lake said of her sons. "We invited them, but I think they were more concerned with what cake they were missing versus the ceremony. We celebrated with them and they've always felt like he's a stepfather to them anyway, so they're really happy for us."

This is the second marriage for Lake, known best for her long-running talk show that focused mainly on relationships. Lake and Evans, a 40-year-old jewelry designer, met through a friend of hers and have been dating since the summer of 2010. In August 2011, Lake announced they were engaged.

"He is my soul mate," Lake said of Evans. "I was ready for that right person to come into my life."

Lake also appeared on "Good Morning America," where she talked about her new memoir and her feelings about her former "Dancing With The Stars" partner Derek Hough kissing his new partner Maria Menounos on Monday during their salsa.

"Derek did not put one on my lips... I'm jealous,' Lake joked on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "I think they're a hot couple. Whether it's happening off the ballroom floor, I don't know, but they look great together. I hate to admit it because Derek is mine - he's mine."

Lake, who has battled weight problems for years, competed on "Dancing With The Stars" last year with partner Derek Hough and slimmed down significantly.

"'Dancing With The Stars' was a huge part of this journey... It was life-changing that experience," Lake continued. "I'm not in the shape I was when I did 'Dancing With The Stars.' You can't sustain that, doing six hours a day of dancing seven days of week, you can't maintain that. I'm a healthy size and I have to love myself every day. I'm working on it. I'm getting better and better."

Lake's new memoir, hit stores on April 17. In the book, "Never Say Never: Finding a Life That Fits," she discusses her weight loss struggle, financial problems, childhood and love life, including her divorce.

"This is me putting it all out there," Lake said on the morning show. "I'm grateful for all the life experiences. The good, the bad, it's all made me who I am today... I'm very grateful at this time in my life that things seem to be falling into place."

Lake is best known for her syndicated talk show "Ricki Lake," which ran between 1998 and 2004. She is set to appear in a new daytime talk series, "The Ricki Lake Show," which debuts on September 10.

She is also an actress who has appeared in films like "Hairspray" in 1988 and "Cry-Baby," a 1990 musical movie starring Johnny Depp. Lake also starred in the 1994 dark comedy "Serial Mom." In 2009, she hosted the VH1 reality show "Charm School" in 2009.
