Rick Springfield arrested for missed court date over 'old DUI charge'

03/08/2013 by Corinne Heller

Police arrested Rick Springfield, the singer best known for his 1981 hit "Jessie's Girl," on Friday, March 8, for missing a court date stemming from a 2011 arrest for driving under the influence.

The 63-year-old rock singer was released later in the day and posted on Facebook a photo of the police station where he was booked, which is located close to Malibu, California.

"My home away from home," he wrote. "Lost hills sheriff station. Arrested this am on a bench warrant. I didn't know that I was supposed appear in court a few weeks ago. It was to do with the old DUI charge and it's been cleared up and i am free to go. Thought I might miss the gig tonite but I will be there and we will celebrate together. Life is not boring. XOXO [sic]"

Springfield is currently performing concerts with Dave Grohl's supergroup the Sound City Players.

The warrant was issued because the singer missed a scheduled court date, a Los Angeles Superior Court spokesperson told OTRC.com's parent company, KABC Television.

Springfield was put on informal probation and ordered to complete three months worth of alcohol education classes as part of a plea deal over a DUI arrest in Malibu in May 2011 that had reduced his charge to misdemeanor reckless driving "with driving under the influence conditions," which does not mention alcohol impairment.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said Springfield was arrested at 9:20 a.m. and that his wife called his attorney, who then went to court to have the warrant recalled. It was taken care of by the time he reached the police station and he was released, the rep said.

The court spokesperson said Springfield is due back in court for a progress report on May 8.
