Ifans and the film's studio, Columbia Pictures, has not commented on the report, carried by TheWrap. The new Spider-Man film reboot is set to hit theaters on July 3, 2012. Filming is set to begin in December.

In the Marvel comic books, Connors, a scientist, ingests a serum made from reptilian DNA, which causes an arm he lost in a blast during his army service to grow back and transforms him into a reptilian humanoid monster.

Columbia Pictures announced a few days ago that Ifans would portray the villain in the Spider-Man reboot but did not specify which one. It said last week that Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy, Parker's love interest.

"What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker," director Marc Webb had said in a statement provided by Columbia Pictures. "Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."

Rhys is most famously known for his role as Spike, the best friend to Hugh Grant's character in the 1999 hit film Notting Hill. He'll also soon be seen as Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Garfield was last seen in the new film The Social Network.

In the previous film trilogy, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man faced off against The Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe, Dr. Octopus, played by Alfred Molina, Sandman, played by Thomas Haden Church, Venom, played by Topher Grace and briefly, Harry Osborn, played by James Franco.
