Rhys Ifans was reportedly cited by San Diego police on Friday for an incident involving a female security guard at Comic-Con, before the actor was set to appear at a panel for the upcoming film "The Amazing Spider-Man."

According to The Wrap, the actor was cited for misdemeanor battery for allegedly shoving a female security guard. Ifans was upset that a member of his entourage could not enter the hall because of a lack of proper credentials, the reports states.

"Rhys Ifans was detained by Comic-Con security after a brief incident backstage prior to and immediately following 'The Amazing Spider-Man' panel," a statment from Sony Pictures, the studio behind "The Amazing Spider-Man," released on Friday said. "Police were notified and a citation was issued to Mr. Ifans who deeply regrets this incident."

Rhys is most famously known for his role as Spike, the best friend to Hugh Grant's character in the 1999 hit film "Notting Hill." He also appeared as Xenophilius Lovegood in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1."

He is set to play the villain The Lizard, aka Dr. Curt Connors in "The Amazing Spider-Man," which stars "The Social Network" actor Andrew Garfield as the superhero and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and is directed by Marc Webb. The movie is set to hit theaters on July 3, 2012.

In the video above, OnTheRedCarpet.com co-host Rachel Smith spoke with Ifans at Comic-Con, where he talked about the upcoming film.

After joking that he hadn't heard of Comic-Con, Ifans told Smith, "I can't think of a better place to launch this magnificent reboot."

"It's a totally fresh interpretation and vision of Spider-Man's story," Ifans added. "As good as the previous films have been, this one will I think will elevate Spider-Man to like a humanity in Peter Parker's character that we haven't seen before."

Ifans also described Stone and Garfield as "two brilliant actors."
