'Resident Evil: Retribution' tops weekend box office with $21.1 million

Audiences flocked to "Resident Evil: Retribution" over the weekend. The zombie film starring Milla Jovovich earned an estimated $21.1 million for its debut, according to The Associated Press.

The film, which was in 3D and was directed by Jovovich's husband Paul W.S. Anderson, sees Jovovich's character, Alice, as a captive of the main operation facility of the evil Umbrella Corporation. She later joins forces with resistance fighters and travel around the world to take down the group and those responsible for unleashing a deadly virus that has transformed humans into zombie-like beings.

Michelle Rodriguez and Jason Isaacs reprise their role as Rain Ocampo, a member of an Umbrella commando unit, and Dr. William Birkin, a former Umbrella biologist. They last played their parts in the first Resident Evil" film, which was released in 2002.

This is the fifth film in the Sony Screen Gems action franchise. The film did even better overseas where it earned $50 million in several markets.

In second place is the revamp of the Pixar classic "Finding Nemo," which hit theaters over the weekend in a 3D format. The animated film, which was originally released in 2003, earned an addition $17.5 million for the weekend.

Last weekend's box office champ, the horror film "The Possession" landed in third place for the weekend, earning estimated $5.8 million. In three weeks the film has earned a total of $41.1 million.

"Lawless," the prohibition-era bootlegging tale starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain ended up in fourth place for its third weekend at theaters. The movie earned $4.1 million and its domestic total now stands at $30.1 million.

"ParaNorman" is still performing well at the box office and finished off the weekend in fifth place with $3 million. The kids film has earned $49.3 million domestically in five weeks of release.

In other box office news, Paul Thomas Anderson's cult drama "The Master," made a successful debut in limited release. The movie broke box office records and earned $729,745 in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The sum makes a record-setting per-screen average of $145,949, the Associated Press reports.

The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader and Joaquin Phoenix as his wayward protege. Amy Adams also co-stars in the film as Hoffman's wife, who has a passionate belief in his character's cult called "The Cause."
