Rapper DMX arrested for driving without license, drove baby daughter (Mug shot)
Rapper DMX was arrested early on Wednesday in South Carolina on suspicion of driving without a license after being pulled over in a 1978 Buick that also carried his baby daughter -- one of his 11 children.
The 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was pulled over just before 1 a.m. in the town of Greer, not far from his house, while driving the car, owned by a female passenger, according to a police report obtained by OTRC.com. He was booked at a local jail just before 2 a.m. and released after several hours after paying a fine.
Authorities say a sheriff's deputy saw the rapper getting out of his vehicle at a gas station and entering its store on Wednesday. The deputy said DMX was there a day earlier and at that time, he discovered he did not have a valid driver's license and also had been issued tickets for it. The rapper currently only possesses an ID card, he added.
The deputy said he then saw DMX returning to the vehicle, which was carrying several other passengers, and driving away onto the road. He then pulled him over and arrested him.
"They watched me at the gas station get in the car," the rapper told the local FOX station WHNS after his arrest. "They followed me around the corner. First of all, he could have pulled me over at the gas station just as the gas station as soon as I got in the car. He didn't do that. Followed me around the corner, pulled me over. You know, knew I didn't have a license. Put the cuffs on me. Brought me here."
"I paid money, when I could have just paid money right there on the spot. It was basically just five hours wasted, for nothing. You know? I just paid the money and went on my way," he said, adding: "I had my five-month-old daughter in the car."
The child was not mentioned in the police report. She was born in September and is one of the rapper's 11 children -- from seven different women. The rapper discussed his kids in an interview with radio station iPower 92.1 FM in Richmond, Virginia that month. He said he would like more, adding: "Children are a blessing."
His car was turned over to one of the other passengers, a woman, who was the real owner of the vehicle, the police report said. DMX's traffic ticket shows that he has a February 19 court date.
In 2010, the rapper served several weeks behind bars over a 2002 reckless driving charge. He was also arrested for speeding in 2011.
He has also been arrested and has served time for non-driving-related charges. In 2009, he served several weeks in jail in Phoenix on charges of drug possession, fraud and animal cruelty.
Also in 2010, DMX spent four month behind bars for failing a court-mandated drug test and testing positive for cocaine and was put on probation. Later that year, he was sentenced to one year in jail for violating his probation by failing to report to a probation officer, submit to drug testing and complete a rehab program.
