Randy Travis' doctors say the country star was treated for congestive heart failure after he was hospitalized earlier this week and is showing signs of improvement and is in stable condition.

The 54-year-old Grammy-winner was taken to a medical center in Texas on Sunday and treated for treated for viral cardiomyopathy, his rep had told OTRC.com in a statement earlier this week. On Tuesday, his condition remained critical.

"He had been in previously excellent health until three weeks prior, when he developed a viral upper respiratory illness," Dr. William Gray, the director of cardiovascular services at Baylor Medical Center at McKinney, told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday, July 10. "He was admitted at Baylor McKinney with a presumptive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure."

Michael Mack, the director of cardiovascular disease at the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, said that he and Gray agreed that "a higher level of specialized care was appropriate."

"Therefore, we transferred him to the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano," he said. "Since his transfer, his condition has stabilized and he has shown signs of improvement."

Earlier this week, Travis underwent a medical procedure to install an IMPELLA device, via a catheter, in a bid to help his heart pump blood.

Meanwhile, several dates of Travis' upcoming tour have been postponed. The list includes three concerts in Canada and one in South Dakota, the first gig, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

UPDATE at 6:45 p.m.: Randy Travis has suffered a stroke -- a complication of his congestive heart failure.
