'Pretty Little Liars' renewed for season 5, spin-off 'Ravenswood' announced
ABC Family has renewed its teen drama series "Pretty Little Liars" for a fifth season and has also revealed plans to produce a spin-off, "Ravenswood."
The cable channel announced the news in a statement to OTRC.com on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, saying that the new show will "center on a town, not far from Rosewood, PA (the home base of 'Pretty Little Liars'), which has suffered under a deadly curse for generations."
"Five strangers suddenly find themselves connected by this fatal curse and need to dig into the town's mysterious and terrible history before it's too late for each of them," the statement said. "The series will premiere on ABC Family following the annual 'Pretty Little Liars' special Halloween episode in October 2013."
"Pretty Little Liars," debuted in 2010 and focused on four teenage girls who drifted apart after their friend died mysteriously and then reunited after they each started receiving cryptic text messages that indicated she may have survived. The show features actresses such as Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell as well as Holly Marie Combs and Chad Lowe.
"Big news day for PLL-we officially got picked up for season 5 AND a spinoff coming ur way in October. Even I can't wrap my head around it !" Hale Tweeted on Tuesday.
Hale and many other "Pretty Little Liars" stars are active on Twitter, where the show maintains a large fan base. A Twitter account for the new spin-off, @RavenswoodABCF, was created on Tuesday.
"We are proud to be able to grow the 'PLL' franchise in two ways - both by adding additional seasons of the original and by extending the storytelling into a spin-off," Michael Riley, President of ABC Family, said in the channel's statement. "'Ravenswood' will become another 'must-Tweet-TV' series for us."
