'Point Break' remake casts Luke Bracey, he joins Gerard Butler (Photo)
Little hand says it's time to rock and roll again, brah.
A planned reboot of "Point Break," Kathryn Bigelow's cult 1991 surfing-themed action film, has found its Johnny Utah. Australian actor Luke Bracey of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" fame will take on the role of the undercover FBI agent, previously played by Keanu Reeves.
Bracey's spokesperson confirmed the casting to OTRC.com on Tuesday, Feb. 25, following a report by Deadline. The outlet added that the new film will focus on the world of extreme sports, rather than surfers.
In January, production company Alcon Entertainment confirmed that Gerard Butler will play Bodhi, a free-spirited surfing fanatic, adrenaline junkie and leader of a group of bank robbers who wear masks of U.S. presidents. Patrick Swayze, who died in 2009, played the role in the original film, during which Utah tries to bond with Bodhi to try to infiltrate the gang. Butler had honed his surfing skills while filming the 2012 drama film "Chasing Mavericks."
Bracey previously played Cobra Commander in the 2013 movie "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and starred with Leighton Meester in the 2011 romantic comedy film "Monte Carlo." He began his acting career in his native Australia and played Trey Palmer on "Home and Away," a popular soap opera that also airs in the U.K. and helped launched the careers of late Oscar winner Heath Ledger, "Thor" actor Chris Hemsworth and "The Mentalist" star Simon Baker.
In 2011, original "Point Break' actor Gary Busey, who played Utah's partner in the FBI, told OTRC.com he would consider appearing in the reboot, adding that the new movie's name should be changed, as "a remake would never equal the first 'Point Break'" and that several conditions must be met if he were to star in it.
