Jenni Rivera, a popular Mexican-American singer, has been confirmed missing in Mexico.

Rivera, 43, is confirmed to have been aboard a small plane that has gone missing after taking off from the city of Monterrey, according to authorities in northern Mexico.

The singer and reality star was aboard the plane that left Monterrey after a concert at about 3:30 a.m. The plane was bound for Toluca, which is located outside of Mexico City.

According to Jorge Domene, a spokesman for the Nuevo Leon state government, a search for the plane was launched early Sunday, and seven people are believed to be aboard the U.S.-registered Learjet 25.

Rivera is a spokeswoman for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Los Angeles. The executive director of the organization, Rita Smith, issued a statement about the singer's disappearance.

"Our hope is that the plane is located and that everyone on board is safe," Smith said in the statement. "Jenni has been a strong advocate in the Latino community to end violence against women and the loss of her voice would be very sad."

The news of Rivera's disappearance comes only days after it was announced that the singer signed a deal with ABC for her own sitcom with Robert Boyett and Robert Horn at the helm.

The show, tentatively titled "Jenni," stars Rivera as a strong, middle-class, single Latina woman working to raise a family using unique parenting skills, while struggling to run a family business and navigate her extended, co-dependent relatives, according to Deadline.

Rivera is largely known for her Mun 2 reality series, "I Love Jenni," which is in its third season. The television network Tweeted about the personality's dissapearance.

"Tweet your thoughts and prayers about @JenniRivera using #WeLoveJenni," mun2 Tweeted.

Rivera, a Long Beach, California native, is known for her music with over 10 studio albums in the banda and nortena music genres, as well as her Mun 2 television series, "I Love Jenni," which debuted its first season in 2011. The singer was also recently named one of People en Espanol's 25 most powerful women.
