Phyllis Smith of 'The Office' wanted sexy 'Bad Teacher' car wash scene
Phyllis Smith of "The Office," who stars opposite Cameron Diaz in the new comedy film "Bad Teacher," jokes that she could have taken over the actress' sexy car wash scene.
"I think I should have been at the car wash, come to think of it," Smith, 59, told OnTheRedCarpet.com special correspondent George Pennacchio of KABC Television. "I gave her all those pointers!"
In the car wash scene, Diaz wears jean shorts and a low-cut top and is seen soaping up a car and writhing on it to the tune of Whitesnake's 1987 hit "Still of the Night."
Sexy car scenes are often found and parodied in films and Tawny Kitaen became a pin-up after she appeared in one in the hair metal group's music video for the 1982 song "Here I Go Again."
Diaz agreed that Smith, who plays Phyllis Vance on the NBC comedy "The Office," would have done the scene justice.
"She's an amazing dancer - she was a dancer for years. She could have pulled it off," Diaz told OnTheRedCarpet.com.
The R-rated comedy was written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who have collaborated on 15 scripts for "The Office," as well as the screenplays for "Year One" and the upcoming "Ghostbusters III" movie.
In the movie, Diaz stars as Elizabeth Halsey, a foul-mouthed junior high teacher who tries to seduce a wealthy substitute teacher Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake) after her sugar daddy dumps her. Her co-worker Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch) also has her eye on Delacorte while the school's gym teacher, Russell Gettis (Jason Segel ) makes advances on Diaz's character.
Punch said of her character was not a "troublemaker," adding: "I think she's doing her best and in her mind, she's the most fabulous, perfect, incredible, wonderful teacher but I think as soon as Cameron comes along, it just all goes to pieces and she just kind of descends into this crazy, poison ivy-rashed lunacy."
"It's fun to improvise, but to be honest, and I've done that a lot in the past, a lot of it was already there in the script and what was nice is that we were all given a lot of freedom to sort of do with the characters what we wanted," Punch said.
"So I had all sorts of lovely ideas that I would pester our lovely director Jake with ... I would love to take credit for some of those wonderful lines, but we had some pretty amazing writers," she said.
Punch, 33, has appeared in films like "Hot Fuzz" and "Dinner for Schmucks. The English actress also appeared on the CBS series "The Class" as Holly Ellenbogen.
Smith is best known for her role as Phyllis Vance on "The Office." The 59-year-old actress formerly toured as a ballet, jazz and burlesque dancer. She was also a cheerleader for the St. Louis Cardinals. The actress joked that she felt awkward laughing at her own jokes during a screening of the film.
"I've never had that experience, first of all to see myself on that big a screen and then to hear people laugh. I laughed at myself one time and then I was embarrassed to do so, like 'They didn't see me laugh at me, did they?'"
