'Pee-wee Herman Show' returning to HBO
"The Pee-wee Herman Show", currently running on Broadway, is set to be made into an HBO special early next year.
The production, which is set to run until Jan. 2, 2011, is based on Paul Reubens' original stage show, his 1980s HBO series "The Pee-wee Herman Show" as well as his 1980s children's television series "Pee-wee's Playhouse".
"Christmas came early yesterday, boys and girls," a Wednesday message on the cable network's Twitter page read. "HBO to shoot Broadway hit "The @PeeWeeHerman Show."
The 58-year-old character actor, known for his distinctive laugh and nerdy makeup, is enjoying a comeback following a 1991 arrest of charges of indecent exposure at an adult movie theater. "Pee-wee's Playhouse" was canceled following the incident.
Reubens is also known for the 1985 film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure". He has in recent years also guest starred in shows such as "Pushing Daisies", "Reno 911!: Miami" and voices a Smurf in the new "Smurfs" film set for release on Aug. 3, 2011.
