'Pacific Rim' star Charlie Hunnam had hairy issue, gave del Toro gift
While filming "Pacific Rim," Charlie Hunnam got into a hairy situation. And after he worked through it, director Guillermo del Toro received a pricey token of his appreciation.
Hunnam told OTRC.com that in order to star in the sci-fi film, he had to shave the beard and longer hair he sports for his regular job -- he plays Jax Teller on the FX biker series "Sons of Anarchy," which premieres its sixth season in September.
"It required a little bit of a compromise on my part and I hate that 'cause 'Sons of Anarchy' is incredibly important to me," he said. "In this last season, specifically 'cause I didn't want to shave and compromise going back at all, I decided not to do a movie this hiatus and I turned a couple of things down."
Hunnan, 33, said he "needed a rest" and wanted to take time off to write. He said he did not want to "compromise the physicality of Jax Teller again."
"Then, wouldn't you know it, Guillermo decided he wanted to add a scene and so, right before I went back, I had to shave," he said. ""I was a little like, 'Oh man, really?' Like, 'Could we have not have done this like three months ago?' And I called him and I was like, 'You screwed me, man,' and we kinda laughed about it."
The joke was eventually on del Toro.
So I shaved my beard off and I took it to him in a Ziploc bag, with 'Million-dollar beard' written on it 'cause I figured I turned down about a million dollars worth of work 'cause I didn't want to have to shave the beard," Hunnam said. "And he laughed pretty hard and he apparently has my beard in his office now."
"Pacific Rim" opened on July 12. The movie depicts an epic war between invading aliens and humans, who pilot giant robot to try to defeat them.
