Guillermo del Toro, director of the new sci-fi blockbuster "Pacific Rim," says he was a "very strange kid" and that his world has always been filled with ... monsters.

The 48-year-old made his comments to OTRC.com at the recent Los Angeles premiere of his new movie. "Pacific Rim" depicts a war between aliens who have invaded earth through the ocean floor and humans piloting giant robots to try to stop them. Del Toro, who was born in Mexican, has also directed "Pan's Labyrinth" and the "Hellboy" films.

"I was a very strange kid," he told OTRC.com. "But I was a very regular kid, in the sense that I think, when you leave a kid with a robot and a dinosaur, the first thing you're gonna do is battle them."

"My family knows who I am," he added. "I've always dreamt of the same things. I've always spoken of the same things and my world has always been populated by monsters. So, to my family, I'm never a surprise. They know me."

"Pacific Rim" opened on July 12 and features "Sons of Anarchy" actor Charlie Hunnam (check out an interview with him -- he describes a hairy situation he had to deal with to make the movie), "Luther" star Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi. The movie took three years to make it, del Toro said.
