Oscars 2013: Wolfgang Puck talks unique Governors Ball menu (Video)
Wolfgang Puck is set to create the menu for the 2013 Governors Ball, the official Oscars after party, and told OTRC.com that this year, variety is everything.
"Well I think the Oscars, you are gonna see movies you haven't seen before - every year there are new movies, there are new movies coming out, and the same thing is with us," he explained to OTRC's George Pennacchio.
"We also use a little comfort - so, something people know already," he continued. "For example, our chicken pot pie with truffles, our macaroni and cheese ... but then we have compressed fruit, kale salad with artichokes, and a fantastic Chinese style salad ... People are going to have enough to eat."
Puck, alongside chef Matt Bencivenga, will create the menu that is set to feature more than 50 unique culinary creations including smoked salmon Oscars, mini Kobe burgers, steamed red snapper and kale salad with artichoke. This will be Puck's 19th consecutive year creating the menu for the Governors Ball.
"It is really great this year, because we have so many different, small dishes," Puck explained. "We're just going to pass around small plates - if it's a potato with caviar, if you like caviar, if you like steak, we have steak, we have small, chicken pot pies, little salads ... so, I think, this year what is great, is the variety - just like the movies."
On January 22, the Academy announced the official Governors Ball creative team, as well as details about the event's decor and unique menu. Academy governor Jeffrey Kurland, master chef Puck and event coordinator Cheryl Cecchetto were announced to be at the helm of the star-studded event.
Cechetto, who has produced the Governors Ball for 23 consecutive years, explained where she got her inspiration for this year's aesthetic.
"You know, it's really interesting, the physical experience last year really led to this design," Cecchetto explained. "Because, you know, it's unconventional now. It's not assigned seating. So I thought - what worked and what didn't work?"
Kurland, who received an Oscar nomination in Costume Design for his work in "Bullets over Broadway," will oversee the decor, menu and entertainment planning, as well as design the attire that event staff will wear. Cecchetto, alongside her Sequoia Productions team, will work with Kurland to manage the details.
The event, which is set to take place in The Ray Dolby Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center, will feature a 120-foot chandelier in an intimate ballroom designed in warm shades of aubergine, chartreuse and champagne. An 18-foot golden Oscar will be the ballroom's centerpiece.
The gathering, which is the official post-Oscars celebration, immediately follows the ceremony and is expected to be attended by 1,500 Academy Awards winners and nominees, show presenters and other telecast participants.
