Oscar winner Alan Menken lands on 'The Neighbors' set
Some out of this world music is coming to the hit ABC alien comedy "The Neighbors."
In an upcoming episode, the aliens discover Broadway. The series landed eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken to lend his talents for the episode, and OTRC was in studio with the cast as they recorded the music.
"They sent me some episodes to look at and I said I'm in," said Menken.
Menken won Oscars for his scores of Disney's "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and "Pocahontas." He also composed soundtracks for the company's other films "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Hercules," "Enchanted" and "Tangled" as well as the movie "Little Shop of Horrors." He won a Tony for the Broadway musical "Newsies."
"I didn't sleep last night I was so excited," said Simon Templeman, who plays lead alien Larry Bird. "I had like three hours of sleep, kept on waking up dreaming I was in an Alan Menkin song."
In a way, that dream came true!
"This is basically sort of a parody so to speak, in the style of Belle from 'Beauty and the Beast'," Menken said.
"We're imagining all the amazing things that happen on Broadway and we're sort of singing about that," said Toks Olagundoye, who plays another lead alien, Jacki Joyner-Kersee.
"I hope they hear me sing and give me a little pass because I'm an alien," said Tim Jo, who plays Reggie Jackson. "Maybe aliens don't have to sound like Justin Bieber."
