It's the ultimate battle of rock versus pop, or maybe just a "boys will be boys" thing.

In any case, Wolfgang Van Halen, the 21-year-old bassist of iconic rock band Van Halen, recently Tweeted about what appeared to be an unpleasant encounter with the British and Irish, wildly popular, all-male group One Direction.

"Fun fact: Was just insulted by that [expletive] boy band #OneDirection in the lobby of our hotel this morning! Greetings Birmingham!" he wrote on his Twitter page on Monday. "No joke. That ACTUALLY happened. That group of kids in #OneDirection were [expletive]s to @IIEROCKII @GWDrums and I."

"They must call themselves that because all of their hair points in #OneDirection," he added.

Reps for the pop group members, who were in Birmingham, England on the day of the reported encounter for a radio interview, had no immediate comment and the singers have not responded publicly to the accusations.

Van Halen, which rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as "Jump" and "Panama," is currently on a break following a North American tour. Wolfgang is currently performing concerts in the United Kingdom with the rock band Tremonti, along with musicians Eric Friedman and Garrett Whitlock.

Whitlock also Tweeted about the encounter with One Direction, saying: "Had a run in with some boy band in the hotel lobby. No worries. I can't take a insult from someone who doesn't even write there own tunes. (sic)"

One Direction is made up of Niall Horan, 19; Zayn Malik, 19; Liam Payne, 19; Harry Styles, 18; and Louis Tomlinson, who is 20. The group was assembled in 2010 during season 7 of Simon Cowell's UK singing contest series "The X Factor" and came in third place.

One Direction went on to become one of the most popular pop groups today and is known for hit singles such as "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Live While We're Young," which was released last month. The five are set to tour the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand in 2013.

Wolfgang, who goes by the nickname Wolfie, is the son of Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli, an actress who currently stars on TV Land's "Hot In Cleveland."

Wolfgang replaced longtime Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and joined the band on its recent reunion tour with original frontman David Lee Roth earlier this year. Van Halen announced in August that upcoming concerts in Japan would be postponed to 2013 due to recent emergency surgery Eddie had undergone to treat an intestinal disorder.

Eddie was recently named the best guitarist of all time by Guitar World magazine readers. Fellow legendary guitar player Slash, who recently played a few shows with Tremonti, congratulated him on Twitter, saying: "Much deserved w/out a doubt. iiii]; )'"
