Olivia Wilde: 'In Time' is eerily like our own society (Video)
Olivia Wilde talks about the real-life parallels between the dystopian society in "In Time" and modern-day life.
"This film will appeal to everyone because it's very unique in its take on a future society where things have gone very wrong, but it's eerily like our own society," Wilde said in an interview provided by Twentieth Century Fox.
"When I tell people the concept, they say, 'Well, that's kind of how it is.' You know, the poor have very little chance of lasting survival and the rich have so much to spare, they take life for granted," Wilde continued. "So, I think everyone will be able to relate to this concept because it is something we live within, that surrounds us, and the philosophical question behind it I think is something anyone of any age asks themselves at one point."
"In Time" takes place in the future, where the human aging gene has been turned off and to avoid overpopulation, people use time as currency. In this world, the rich can live forever and when a young man named Will Salas (Timberlake) inherits a fortune of time, he ends up fighting against the corrupt police force known as 'time keepers.'
Amanda Seyfried stars as Salas' hostage and romantic interest. The film also features Olivia Wilde as Timberlake's mother and Matt Bomer as the wealthy man who gives his time to Salas.
"The whole story is very, very modern and every element of it is just so unique. Every car that is in the world, every costume, every character -- it's a new type of film, it's not derivative of anything and that's why it really appeals to me and why it will appeal to a larger audience as well."
Wilde also co-starred opposite Timberlake in the 2006 film, "Alpha Dog." Director Andrew Niccol ("Gattaca") told the trade publication that he sought out actors who could portray older characters while still looking like they were 25 years old.
"I went on a search for these old souls," Niccol told Entertainment Weekly. "Olivia has something about her -- a maturity that's way beyond her years... She just inhabited the role."
The 27-year-old actress, who starred on the show "House M.D," and Timberlake, a 30-year-old pop star, were romantically linked in April, but Wilde denied the relationship on her Twitter page, writing, "Cool it, honeybadgers. We are just friends and have been for years."
In early March, Wilde filed for divorce from husband Tao Ruspoli after announcing their separation in February. The same time, Timberlake and actress-girlfriend Jessica Biel called it quits after four years of dating. However, the two have been spending time together in recent weeks.
"In Time" opened in theaters on October 28, watch a trailer below.
