(Photo courtesy of AP)Oksana Grigorieva says Mel Gibson once waved a gun in front of her and that she thought he would kill her while she held their baby daughter Lucia during a January confrontation, while the actor has denied allegations of domestic abuse.

In comments made to People magazine, the 40-year-old Russian-born musician and former model says Gibson, 54, also often flew into jealous rages and talked about suicide.

Los Angeles authories are investigating allegations of alleged extortion of Gibson as well as her claims of domestic violence during a January confrontation, made amid an ugly custody battle over Lucia. No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made. People quoted a source close to Gibson as saying the actor intervened when she was shaking the child.

"I thought he would kill me," the magazine quoted Grigorieva as saying. "I'm not angry at him. For the sake of Lucia, I really want him to be well. He has to have the courage to be responsible for what he's done."

Grigorieva said she decided to tape his angry phone calls, heard in recordings leaked in July on RadarOnline.com and which contained racist and explicit remarks, to "document his threats". Grigorieva has denied she leaked the tapes and Gibson has not commented on them. She also denies she used the recordings to extort him and has said before she is not afraid of possible charges.

Grigorieva's attorney has said she was a "terrorized" woman and a "domestic violence victim". The custody battle over their 11-month-old daughter turned ugly as Grigorieva has rejected a deal to destroy all so-called evidence relating to the split in return for $15 million, KABC Television, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company, recently reported.

Sheriff's investigators questioned the methods of the negotiations and a spokesman for the sherrif's department was quoted as saying: "When attorneys are negotiating a settlement and they are talking back and forth to reach some kind of settlement - is that just negotiating tactics or is it extortion?"

RadarOnline.com quoted Grigorieva as saying in August: "I have never extorted anything from him. There is no proof of any kind. It's all false information that he is feeding the press and it's a smear campaign."

The sheriff's department told KABC Television the extortion case is complicated and they are several weeks away from presenting their case to prosecutors. They are reviewing emails, text messages and plan to interview a number of involved parties, including Grigorieva.
