Nirvana, Kiss, Hall & Oates among Rock Hall of Fame 2014 inductees
Nirvana, Kiss and Hall & Oates are among the groups who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
They will be joined by singers Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt and Cat Stevens, British record producer Andrew Loog Oldham and late Beatles manager Brian Epstein -- who will receive Ahmet Ertegun Awards, as well as the E Street Band. The group, known for performing and recording with 1999 inductee Bruce Springsteen, will receive the Award for Musical Excellence at next year's event.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced the names in a statement to OTRC.com on Tuesday, Dec. 17. In October, the group released a list of nominees. The bands and artists who were nominated but did not make the cut include iconic 1970s metal group Deep Purple, progressive rock band Yes and rapper LL Cool J (see who else was nominated).
Grunge band Nirvana was led by Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in April 1994, and was known for songs such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come As You Are." The group's drummer, Dave Grohl, went on to form the Foo Fighters, along with touring guitarist Pat Smear. November 18 marked the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's iconic "MTV Unplugged" performance.
Kiss is made up of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. The band members are known for their wild black and white stage makeup. The group rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with hits such as "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Detroit Rock City."
"I'm honored to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame knowing we've remained true to ourselves and our fans," Stanley tweeted.
The 2014 inductees will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a ceremony on April 10, 2014 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in New York City. The event will air on HBO in May. Tickets to the general public go on sale in January.
