Nina Dobrev splits with Ian Somerhalder, reports say

05/09/2013 by Kristina Lopez

"The Vampire Diaries" co-stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder have reportedly called it quits.

Dobrev, 24, and Somerhalder, 34, split recently, according to People magazine. The two actors have been romantically linked since 2011 and were spotted together as recently as mid-April when their cat, Moke, was ill and was taken to the vet for an emergency visit.

Dobrev posted a photo of Somerhalder with the cat on her WhoSay page on April 11. She later posted a photo of herself with the cat.

The actors have not commented publicly about the split and a spokesperson for Dobrev had no immediate comment on the reported break up.

Dobrev stars on "The Vampire Diaries" as Elena. Somerhalder plays the vampire Damon, one of Elena's love interests on the show. In an April 2010 issue of Seventeen magazine, before she began dating Somerhalder, Dobrev said she would be hesitant to date one of her co-stars.

"To be completely honest, dating an actor is very complicated," she said at the time. "There's a lot of vanity involved. And they're in their head and they're kind of crazy. And you're always surrounded by beautiful people. I would prefer not to date an actor."

In an October 2012 interview with the magazine, Dobrev talked about her previous comments and called them funny considering that she was in a relationship with Somerhalder.

"The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said 'Nina: Why she wouldn't date any of her co-stars,'" Dobrev told the magazine.

"And then cut to two years later ... it's funny that I said that, but you know what? It was honestly what I believed at the time. I didn't want to be dating one of my co-stars -- my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long -- which I did for a really, really long time."
