Nicole Kidman says being with Keith Urban 'just gave me confidence'
Nicole Kidman has come a long way since she shot to fame and walked a red carpet event with ex-husband Tom Cruise. In fact, the actress reveals in a new interview with Harper's Bazaar the moments she feels very awkward and how husband Keith Urban improved her confidence.
The 45-year-old spoke to Harper's Bazaar for its November issue and referred to her early years of fame following her meeting with Tom Cruise on the set of "Days of Thunder" as "fame by association."
She recalled what it was like going to industry events during that time and told the magazine, "It was like, 'I'm here and I'm clutching onto your arm, and it all feels a little overwhelming and really strange.'"
"I was shy. Deeply shy. I didn't feel comfortable at all," she added. "But I felt very comfortable at home."
The actress and Cruise, 50, divorced in 2001 after 10 years of marriage and he won custody of their adopted son and daughter, Connor, 17, and Isabella, 19. Kidman remarried in 2006. She and her husband, country music singer and new "American Idol" judge Keith Urban, 44, are parents to two daughters - Sunday, 4, and Faith, 1.
"He just gave me confidence," Kidman said about Urban, "through just being very kind to me and understanding me, opening me up to trying things, my sexuality, those sorts of things."
The actress also said she appreciated "a bigger, stronger personality; that's what I've been drawn to. I need protection. Everyone wants to feel someone's got their back."
Although Kidman is now experienced with walking at red carpet events, she still finds it to be "awkward."
"I find standing and posing for photos very awkward," Kidman said. "I make sure to wear comfortable dresses because I want to be able to go out afterward and, you know, bend."
Kidman also talked about one of her most memorable gowns, the Dior dress she donned to the 1997 Academy Awards.
"It's packed in a box with tissue paper, and it will be donated to a museum," she said.
Kidman can be seen in the recently released film "The Paperboy." The film is about a reporter named Ward Jansen, played Matthew McConaughey, who returns to his hometown in Florida to investigate the events surrounding a murder in hopes of exonerating Hillary Van Wetter, played by John Cusack, who is on death row.
The actress plays Wetter's seductive lover Charlotte. Zac Efron also stars in the film as Ward's younger brother Jack, who helps him investigate the case and falls for Charlotte. Check out the trailer for the film below.
