Nicki Minaj in talks to join Mariah Carey as 'American Idol' judge, report says
Nicki Minaj is reportedly in talks to join Mariah Carey as an "American Idol" judge for the show's next season, following the departure of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
"I'm not sure the deal is completely done yet, but yes, she is definitely doing it," an insider told Us Weekly. "A few more slight things to sign off on but it is happening."
A second source told the weekly magazine that Minaj is "100% confirmed to judge 'American Idol.'"
A FOX representative had no immediate comment on the reports. Minaj herself has also not addressed the rumors.
Minaj, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj, toured alongside Britney Spears last year and is slated to do a world tour herself starting on October 21.
Minaj is largely known by mainstream audiences for her single "Super Bass," off her debut album "Pink Friday." The song has sold over four million copies and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
On August 4, Nick Jonas confirmed that he is in talks to become a new judge on "American Idol," writing on his official Twitter page that it would be "a dream come true" to judge the reality singing competition.
It was confirmed on July 23 that Mariah Carey had signed on as an "American Idol" judge.
Lopez and Tyler, singer of the band Aerosmith, joined the series in 2010 and served as co-judges alongside veteran cast member Randy Jackson for the past two seasons. The former two were cast on the show soon after the departure of the show's most famous judge and co-creator, Simon Cowell, as well as Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres.
Tyler announced in July that he is leaving his "mistress" "American Idol" to focus on his work with his "first love" - his rock group, which is currently touring and is set to release a new album in November.
Lopez's spokesperson confirmed on July 13 that the singer and actress will not return to "American Idol" next season, shortly after the star told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she felt like it was time to move on.
"I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I've put kind of on hold because I love 'Idol' so much," Lopez said. "It just feels like we had an amazing run."
