Neil Patrick Harris set to return to Broadway in 'Hedwig'
The "How I Met Your Mother" actor will return to Broadway this spring as the lead in the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," according to The Associated Press.
The show, which was written by John Cameron Mitchell and composer Stephen Trask, will announce the rest of the creative team, cast, dates and venue at a later date.
Mitchell initially starred in the off-Broadway production, which played for two years starting in 1998. He reprised the role in the 2001 film version.
In a statement to the AP Mitchell said, "Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?"
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is a rock musical about a fictional rock band fronted by a transgender singer from East Germany. Harris, who turned 40 on June 15, has starred in three Broadway shows including "Assassins," "Proof" and "Cabaret." He was also a part of the touring company for "Rent." The actor has hosted the Tony awards four times.
The actor said in a statement to the AP, "I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig's heels. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the journey."
