Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka and Chaz Bono honored by LGBT group (Video)
Neil Patrick Harris, partner David Burtka and Chaz Bono were recently honored by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center at its 40th Anniversary Gala.
Harris, star of the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," and Burtka, who have supported the group and other LGBT organizations for years, were given the Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement Award at the Los Angeles event on Saturday. The two have been together for more than six years and are parents to twins.
"As a couple, Neil and David are respected and loved by the LGBT community," the group's CEO Lorri L. Jean said in a statement. "They are role models to many, especially our youth, for how to live openly, with honesty and integrity."
"David and I don't really consider ourselves true activists," Harris added. "There's a lot of other people who do that heavy lifting. Sometimes we choose to raise our voices so that the world can hear us but other times we want to, frankly, curl up at home and be a family together."
Bono, the transgendered son of singer Cher and a recent "Dancing With The Stars" contestant, was dubbed a "trailblazer in transgender activism," by the group, which gave him the Board of Directors Award and praised him for allowing his experience of transitioning to a man to be filmed for the OWN documentary "Becoming Chaz."
"No other person has done more than Chaz to promote visibility and understanding about the reality of transgender people," Jean said. "His courageous example is helping transgender youth and their families throughout the world. That's great progress not only for the LGBT community, but for society as a whole."
The ceremony was hosted by Leslie Jordan and also featured "Glee" actress Jane Lynch, who presented Harris and Burtka with their award, as well as David Arquette, who presented Bono with his. Arquette also appeared on this past season of "Dancing With The Stars" and was eliminated last month.
Others who attended the event included Karina Smirnoff, who is still in the running to win the current 13th season of the ABC ballroom dancing show with partner J.R. Martinez, George Kotsiopoulous of E! series "Fashion Police" and burlesque star Dita Von Teese.
