Natalie Portman stars in 'Black Swan' (Photo credit: Fox Searchlight Pictures)Natalie Portman might be on her way to earning her first Oscar as critics wasted no time are praising her performance in Black Swan after its premiere at the Venice film festival.

The film left critic David Gritten from Britains Daily Telegraph saying, A lead performance from Natalie Portman that elevates her from a substantial leading actress to major star likely to be lifting awards in the near future."

In the Fox Searchlight film, directed by Darren Aronofsky of The Wrestler and is set for release next year, Portman plays Nina, who is picked to play the lead in a New York City production of the ballet Swan Lake, while being pushed to succeed by an overbearing mother.

Meanwhile, manipulative dance master Korolyevna, played by Vincent Cassel, tells her she should play the part more seductively. Mila Kunis stars as Lilly, a dancer who has more of the characteristics that Korolyevna seeks; She and Nina become both rivals and friends, while Nina later suspects Lilly has begun to stalk her.

According to Reuters, Portman and Aronofsky talked about the love scene she has with co-star Mila Kunis. "He described it as: 'You're going to have a sex scene with yourself.' And I thought that was very interesting, because this movie is in so many ways an exploration of an artist's ego and that narcissistic sort of attraction to yourself and also repulsion with yourself."
