Naomi Watts is Princess Diana in 'Diana' - teaser trailer (Video)
The first teaser trailer for the biopic "Diana," starring Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts stars as the late Princess Diana, has been released (watch it below).
Watts, 44, is seen sporting teased, short blonde hair as she recreates several scenes from the life of the Princess of Wales, mother of the UK's Prince William and Prince Harry. She is photographed and followed by the paparazzi, who had pursued Diana and then-boyfriend Dodi Fayed before they died in a fatal car accident in Paris in 1997. She was 36.
Other scenes show her doing charity work abroad, walking a red carpet and greeting fans (to the sound of a dramatic riff that brings to mind a certain 1980s song about a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world). Diana was dubbed the "People's Princess" due to her popularity in her native United Kingdom and her televised funeral was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people.
Diana was born Diana Spencer to an aristocratic family in England. At age 20, she married Prince Charles, son of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1981. William was born a year later. He and wife Kate, formerly Kate Middleton, wed in April 2012. She wears Diana's engagement ring. In July, the two are set to welcome their first child, who is poised to become the heir to the British throne.
Diana and Charles divorced in 1996. Diana was a tabloid favorite and her later relationships with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and Fayed were well-documented by the press.
"Diana" focuses on the last two years of Diana's life and relationship with Khan, played by "LOST" actor Naveen Andrews. Cas Anvar portrays Fayed. The movie is expected to be released in the United States later this year.
"DIANA will give audiences worldwide a chance to not only fall in love with the Princess all over again, but also discover a part of her life up until now kept out of the public eye," Dylan Wiley, vice president of Theatrical Marketing and Distribution for distributor eOne Films US, said in a statement. "And only Naomi Watts could bring such a modern icon to life, through a truly beautiful and nuanced performance."
Watts was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year for her performance in the film "The Impossible," in which she and Ewan McGregor played tsunami survivors. She received her first Academy Award nod for her role in the 2003 movie "21 Grams." Watts is also known for her parts in films such as "King Kong," "Mulholland Dr."
