'Murder, She Wrote' reboot to star Octavia Spencer of 'The Help'

Octavia Spencer, who won an Oscar for her role in "The Help," is set to star in a reboot of the hit mystery drama series "Murder, She Wrote."

The actress' spokesperson confirmed to on Thursday, Oct. 24, that NBC is developing a pilot that would see Spencer, 43, play a hospital administrator and amateur detective who self-publishes her first mystery novel. The news was reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

Angela Lansbury, now 88 years old, played the main heroine, a mystery novel writer who investigates real murders, in the original "Murder, She Wrote" series, which aired on CBS for 12 seasons, from 1984 to 1996.

Lansbury was nominated for an Emmy for her role after every season and never won an award, although she did receive four Golden Globe Awards for hte part. The series won two Emmys and was nominated 41 times.

Spencer played rebellious housekeeper and daring baker Minny Jackson in the 2011 film "The Help." She has had TV experience before -- she played Constance Grady on the show "Ugly Betty" and also appeared on "Wizards of Waverly Place," "LAX," "Raising the Bar" and recently, the CBS sitcom "Mom."
